Gaining its name in honor of the fifth U.S. President, James Monroe, the City of Monroe was founded in 1817. Currently, it has a population of more than 14,000 residents; it is located along Interstate 75, between Cincinnati and Dayton.

During its early days, and up until the 1830s, Monroe was home to only 119 residents, and it had only a single store. Since then, the city has blossomed, and today it thrives with retail stores and industrial enterprises throughout the 16-square-mile section of land. City officials describe the community as being well-rounded.

Monroe is home to the well-known Lux Mundi statue, (which means “Light of the World” in Latin), which anyone traveling through the area has seen. The statue portrays a 52-foot tall figure of Jesus holding his arms out in a welcoming “hugging-like” manner. However, before this famous statue was constructed in 2012 beside Interstate 75, there was a slightly different statue of Jesus placed there by the megachurch, Solid Rock Church, and its 4,000 plus members. That previous 16,000-pound statue, called “King of Kings” was commonly referred to as “Touchdown Jesus” because it depicted Christ holding both hands up in the air (some 62 feet total) similar to the way an official signifies a touchdown in football. It burned to the ground in 2010 after having been struck by lightning.

Aside from the famous statue, Monroe is also home to the Traders World Flea Market, Treasure Aisles (previously called Turtlecreek Flea Market), and Cincinnati Premium Outlets.

The city has a variety of parks and hosts community events that draw in people from around the area.
