When to Replace Your Furnace

Homeownership comes with tough decisions. While we’ve all heard that investing in a home increases its value, deciding where and how to do that can be a tough choice. Should you remodel the kitchen? Finish the basement? The answer isn’t always clear.

When it comes to your heating system, the decision-making process gets even harder. Unless you’re a trained HVAC technician, it can be tough to tell whether a malfunctioning furnace needs new batteries in the thermostat or a more comprehensive repair. For homeowners with older heating systems, the decision often becomes whether to repair the unit or replace it entirely.

Much like an old car, furnaces show signs of failure before they actually fail. By paying attention to the performance of your older furnace, you can start preparing for the purchase of a new unit before you need it. You’ll also reap the benefits of enhanced comfort, lower energy bills, and more.

Our experienced technicians can help you make the decision if you’re unsure whether to repair or replace your furnace. Schedule a Diagnostic Service Call today and we’ll come out to inspect your system!

We’ve put together a few signs of a furnace that may have an issue to be addressed:

Furnace Repair in Monroe, OH

Your Furnace is over 10 years old

If your furnace is older than 10 years of age, it’s likely not operating at optimal efficiency.

Frequent Need for Repairs

If you’re getting yearly Furnace Tune-Ups from qualified technicians, your furnace should not be experiencing breakdowns during the summer. Many furnace issues are caused by a lack of maintenance.

Your Energy Bills Have Increased

Noticed an increase in bills? If your energy use habits have stayed the same but your monthly bill has noticeably increased, it might be time for a new furnace.

Choosing The Right Furnace for Installation

Furnaces have long been the single-most popular heating system. There are three main options for homeowners to choose from:

  • Gas furnaces have low operating costs and are the most common.
  • Electric furnaces are a suitable alternative where natural gas is not available.
  • Oil furnaces are another alternative if natural gas isn’t an option for your home.

Our Furnace Installations are Quick & Easy

At Monroe Heating & Air, we make the installation process a breeze for our customers. First, we’ll dispose of your old HVAC equipment in an environmentally friendly manner. Then, we’ll begin installation according to which package you’ve chosen. We’ll reconnect the ductwork, calibrate the new system controls, and perform tests on the new system to ensure everything is 100% working order. We’ll be sure to clean up after ourselves and be on our way — leaving you and your family more satisfied than when we arrived!

When installing a new Furnace, keep in mind:

  • Your geographic location – If you rely more on heating than on air conditioning because you live in a cold geographic location, it’s especially worthwhile to invest in a high-efficiency furnace replacement.
  • Your existing system – It’s important to consider existing systems in your home as well as your future plans. For example, if you’re interested in adding air conditioning, a heat pump might be a better choice than a furnace, depending on your climate. And if your home doesn’t have ductwork, a boiler could prove to be the most economical option.

Furnace FAQ

 We’re Here to Help

What is carbon monoxide? What should I do if I smell gas?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and toxic gas. The Environmental Protection Agency warns that at low levels of exposure, CO causes mild effects that are often mistaken for the flu. These symptoms include headaches, dizziness, disorientation, nausea, and fatigue.

If you’re concerned about a potential leak, evacuate yourself and any other persons/pets from inside the home immediately. Use a phone located outside of the home to call your local gas utility and/or the fire department.

How is the efficiency of heating equipment measured?

The S.E.E.R. (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) is the amount of cooling your system will deliver per dollar spent on electricity. For example, a 3-ton unit may have a S.E.E.R. efficiency rating of 13, 14, or 15. The higher the S.E.E.R., the more efficient the system will be. The S.E.E.R. rating of any given unit can range anywhere from 13 to 17.

What's the best way to extend the life of my unit?

Reducing usage is always helpful, so turn the thermostat up or down, as needed, to reduce usage when you’re not at home. Changing air filters will prevent clogs. Regular check-ups can also help you ward off any potential trouble spots. Maintenance also keeps your warranty in good standing and is often recommended by manufacturers.
